Questions and Answers with Mama Bear Boss  Mary Ann Hanlon of Mary Ann’s Dance and More

1. What is your name? What are your children's names and ages?

Mary Ann Hanlon – I have a 25 year old biological daughter, Katelyn and a 10 year old adopted son, Michael.

2. What inspired/encouraged you to start your business?

At the time, I was the office manager at a local dance studio.  The week before the “January Show” performance, parents were complaining about having to travel so far to get a pair of dance tights.  That was when the idea of opening the store was born.  After that, things just seemed to fall into place – someone called us about a store-front for rent and within 6 months, we opened the store!  We worked closely with local studios to ensure that we stocked items that were required for dress codes, competitions, etc.  The rest, as they say, “is history.”

3. What do you love about your work?

The best part of the business is outfitting the newest dancers – toddlers as well as those a little older who are living out their childhood dreams of becoming a dancer – and watching them grow!  Having been in business now for almost 12 years, it’s great to see those little ones who entered our doors 12 years ago shy and not sure of dance grow into confident dancers!

4. What advice do you have for others wanting to start a business?

Do your research first. Be aware of competitors and the internet. Stock what the customer needs not what you think they want. And be prepared to work 24/7, the business doesn’t stop when you close the doors at the end of the day.

5. What do you do to take care of yourself and how do you make time to do it?

Having a business and a special needs child is a challenge for taking time and care of myself. I have learned to pamper myself a little every day – be it watching a TV show, soaking in the tub or having that dessert.

6. What can we do to support you in the community?

Community support is vital to all small businesses. Supporting them by shopping locally when you can and not on the internet is the biggest help!

7. Favorite spot to take your children around town?

Easthampton has many spots and one of my favorite is the park at Mill 180.  Michael loves the corn hole and is pretty good at it!
